Animator, illustrator and renovator

Working as a freelance animator and illustrator for studios across the U.K. and restoring a 16th Century cottage in Devon between projects.

 

2007 - 2009 - Django Films - Edinburgh, Scotland

Head of 3D

Working on Sylvain Chomet’s Oscar nominated “The Illusionist”. Responsible for the production of all the 3D elements and integrating them into a predominantly 2D animated feature.

 

2005 - 2006 - Django Films - Edinburgh, Scotland

CG artist/storyboard artist

Working on the pre-production for a CG animated feature, “The Tale of Despereaux”, directed, at that time, by Sylvain Chomet. My roles included creation and manipulation of all Maya assets for testing purposes and initial storyboarding thumbnails.

 

2004 - 2007 - Duncan of Jordanstone - Dundee, Scotland

Teaching Fellow

Teaching animation part-time at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, whilst completing Roux County, a 15-minute reworking of the CG animation that I began during my NESTA Fellowship.

 

2002 - 2004 - NESTA Fellowship - London

Animation Director/script writer

In October 2002 I was awarded a Fellowship by NESTA (National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts). Providing funding of £82,500 to produce a 12-minute animation over the next 2 years.

Over ten years I progressed from a BBC staff Set Designer (on a large number of productions including Period Drama, Light Entertainment and Comedy), to a freelance Director/Animator working on Documentaries, comedy sketches, Educational programs and Title sequences, for Film and TV.

“Roux County”, a 15 minute fairy tale set in the Deep South. Premiering at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2007. Writer/Director 2007

“Maud And The Grumpy Planet” (pilot and development), a 45 second trailer and 3 minutes of work in progress designed to promote a 30 minute Christmas special (the first in a trilogy). Writer/Director 2001

“Wrong Turn”, a 3 minute animated short commissioned by Channel 4 as part of the MESH scheme. Writer/Director 2001

“How The Sea Was Salt”, winner of Best animation at BAFTA Scotland’s New Talent Awards. Also screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival as part of the Post Office Mclaren Award. (And in the “Best of the Fest”). Writer/Director 2000

“Life According to Fred”, Two seasons worth of comedy shows for the BBC, 12 animated sketches, 2 title sequences and a multitude of stings. All done in a very low tech fashion. Animation Director/co-writer 1999/2000

“Mourning Becomes A Picture”(a war artist in Bosnia), a 30 minute documentary for BBC Scotland. Direction/camera 1997

​

“The Craigmuddie Miracle”, a short film about Alien abduction in fourteenth century Scotland. Shown at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, acclaimed as the shortest film there (60 seconds) and nominated for the Post Office Mclaren Award. Shot on 35mm rostrum with multiple exposures. Animation Director 1997
